Discover the Majestic Landscapes of New Zealand's South Island
One of the very best and most adventurous experiences is when you trek to New Zealand, across the South Island. From the magnificent Blue Lake, over scenic Moss Pass and across to tranquil Lake Rotoroa is one of my all-time favorite walks. It encapsulates the beauty and diversity of New Zealand, making it a must-do long-distance hike for anyone who wants to enjoy spectacular landscapes.
A Journey Starts at Blue Lake
Blue Lake is one of the highest in quality fresh-water lakes, along with being a small crystal-clear lake located deep within Kosciouszko National Park. When you kickoff your hike this is how the lake greets for what lays ahead of you on an adventure. If you're a fan of the outdoors, Blue Lake National Park is nestled among towering mountains and vibrant greenery perfect for magnificent nature hikes.
Crossing Moss Pass
The trail goes over Moss pass, one of the most beautiful sections as you leave Blue Lake. This portion of the trail is one you wont want to miss, presenting panoramic views and a vast wilderness. The rugged mountain Felsschluchten and an impressive backdrop of alpine peaks make travelling here feel much more than your average postcard scene. Wildlife—both plants and animals from all over—are what paint this ever changing picture of the environment, making it feel as fulll you exactly where when with bright colors stealing attention.
Arrival at Lake Rotoroa
Lake Rotoroa marks the end of this particular tramp following victory on Moss Pass, and it is an ideal dovetail for anyone looking to stop and smell the native flowers. Lake Rotoroa is often photographed with its mirror flat water mirroring the steep mountainsides that envelop it. It would be great to hike up here and take some rest, observe beauty around you and even have a picnic on this shore.
An Unforgettable Experience
However, unlike most trails in New Zealand, this walk is more than the sum of its destination parts — it connects hikers with the interior heart lands. Long after the journey is over, those lasting memories of this physical challenge will remain with you.
A hike from Blue Lake to Moss Pass and onto Lake Rotoroa is an unmissable walk for the experienced tramping family or beginner explorer. Every step provides another view of the remarkable South Island of New Zealand, so it really is a hike you should consider slotting in to your adventure plans. Strap on those hiking boots, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
